Is an open glass corner right for your project?
Large slimline sliding doors have long been the choice for our clients seeking wide uninterrupted expanses of glass, and for that frameless feel for their new home or extension.
On trend now are open corners, where doors slide away from a 90 degree corner to create a completely uninterrupted view. Ceilings appear to float without support, cantilevered from structural steelwork.
There’s no frame to reinforce the boundaries between interior and exterior living spaces. Indoors and outdoors merge together, the resulting space feels open and airy, and family life moves easily between the two, depending on the weather and time of day.
Interiors seem larger and wider with an open corner as it has the effect of extending the horizon line beyond the footprint of the building. It’s an optical illusion of course, but that’s what good architecture is all about.
Open corners work for detached homes with generous patio areas where dining and entertaining take place, but they’re an equally effective glazing solution for city homes with very modest gardens and courtyards that need to enhance their sense of space.
Open Glass Corner Configuration
Unlike a standard fixed sliding system, an open corner system has an end panel with a moveable corner post which slides with the rest of the panels. And just like any other aspect of a bespoke sliding system design, your open glass corner can be configured as you wish. It can be located at the left or right corner of your space, with panel height and widths to suit your design.
We recommend you line up an open corner with the best aspect of your room for maximum impact. While a symmetrical four panel with a 2:2 split meeting at the corner might work for your room, you can opt for additional moving panels and matching fixed full length windows to increase the amount of glass walling on either side of a corner installation.
Architectural Liaison
As specialist glazing designers and installers, we liaise with architects and structural engineers when designing more complex glazing systems like open corners. We’ll ensure your open corner glazing is specified, manufactured and installed correctly. It’ll not only give your new space the wow factor, you’ll have complete peace of mind that your bespoke sliding system meets all the latest building regs and standards.
Open corners with support posts
Open glass corners for large openings sometimes require a fixed steel post to support the weight of the building above. This essential support can be placed either within the room itself or outside incorporated as part of the roof overhang.
Best sliding systems for open glass corners
All our robust aluminium sliding door systems can be installed with open corners. Most popular is the ODC SL320, a minimalist slimline system with the thinnest sightlines. Clients looking for an open corner design to deliver uninterrupted views and that frameless feel, find the design features of the SL320 deliver their vision. This system is installed on a flush threshold with its base frame concealed below floor level to reinforce that seamless look.
Performance and security
When closed, open corners are as thermally efficient and watertight as a standard wall of sliding doors. Open corners provide the same high level of security when closed as any other sliding door system and are fitted with the same rigorously tested multi-point locks.
