Glass swimming pool enclosures and pool rooms: glazing advice
A pool room or garden swimming pool is a really special element of anyone’s home, a valued space dedicated to fitness, wellbeing and relaxation. So how does architectural glazing contribute to the ultimate pool room experience? We explore recent ODC projects which feature fabulous and inviting swimming pools.
Indoor glass pool enclosures
A professional architectural glazing design will optimise natural light to ensure you enjoy your pool at at all times of the day and year. High performance, thermally efficient large windows, full height glass doors and rooflights in a range of matching frame profiles and colours will create a bright, appealing space.
A pool room with a view
As part of their new home’s design, this client wanted an indoor pool that made the most of the property’s amazing views. Floor to ceiling ODC SL320 slimline sliding doors create glass walls for this pool room. A flush threshold ensures seamless transition to the outdoors and solar control glass coatings help create the best environment for its use all year round.
Pool room with sliding doors and rooflight
This pool is fully integrated into this new home’s living space. It’s accessed via ODC 300 sliding doors from the open plan living area, as well as from the patio. It’s also overlooked by an internal window in the relaxed seating area. Large fixed windows continue the glass on all sides and a long rooflight brings sunlight to the furthest section of the pool and the internal space beyond.
Outdoor pools
Situated next to a garden room or adjacent to the main house, outdoor swimming pools are very visible, attractive features in any garden. We design sliding doors and bifolds that don’t just access your outside, they have large glass panels, minimal frames, flush thresholds and glass corner openings – all features to enhance and facilitate the connection between your home and your pool.
Architect-designed poolside garden room and home gym
Part of a complete new build family home, this garden room has extra-wide, extra tall ODC121 bifold doors on two sides, opening out to the deck and pool just a couple of metres away. Bifolds have the configuration versatility this space requires – functioning as overnight guest room, gym or pool changing room, these systems have optional openings for users – anything from a single traffic door to all six panels folded out for maximum opening and ventilation.
Pavilion house and natural swimming pool
This beautiful and unusual swimming pool wraps around a contemporary pavilion home and is fed by natural springs. A glass box room created by three metre high fixed glass panels reflects the pool’s expanse. Glass and water throw dappled light to play on the walkways and the building’s metallic surfaces.
A system with minimal visible framing, huge glass panel sizes and glass to glass installation, the ODC SL320 is the perfect system to create the illusion of living in harmony with nature.
Glass for swimming pool enclosures: technical glazing specifications
Consult an ODC architectural glazing designer about a glass pool room and you’ll quickly grasp it’s a very specialist area. Pool rooms have greater variation in temperature and humidity than other parts of your home and the build-up of moisture and heat can have a considerable impact on your doors, windows and glazed surrounds.
Like glazing fitted on coastal properties and those in exposed locations, doors and windows for swimming pool enclosures require particular specifications.
ODC high-performance glazing, UK manufactured aluminium frames, powder-coated marine grade coatings and the best fixtures and sealants designed to withstand these conditions will ensure the longevity of your glazing.
When you use your pool you’ll want to see clear glass, lots of daylight, and views if you have them! We offer options for glass coatings to limit condensation and misting, and to reduce maintenance, and these will help keep your glass surrounds and doors streak free.
We know a warm, relaxing environment is really important, ODC door and window systems with exceptional thermal efficiency, thermally broken glass panels and EDPM seals will sustain the temperatures you desire.
Safety matters, of course, and so toughened, laminated glass which holds its shape when broken is essential for any installation within two metres of a pool.
Frames should be finished in a polyester powder coating to a thickness of at least 60 microns (BS EN 13438) to withstand the toughest conditions. Guaranteed against corrosion and easy to keep clean, ODC slimline aluminium powder-coated frames are ideal for this kind of location.
Ventilation of a glass pool enclosure is another technical area in which we can offer our expertise; humidity control, air quality, ventilation systems, vents and the optimum positioning of doors and windows are all included in the design specification.
