We’re so impressed with MP Chartered Architects’ transformation of a redundant outbuilding into a guest annexe for a handsome red brick farmhouse.
The house and the timber-clad single storey barn conversion each have their own identity and privacy, but there is still an attractive connection between them for security and flow.
The buildings are joined by a bespoke glass link, a framed weather-sealed structure with a structural glass roof. It’s an extremely well-insulated design which maximises natural light and provides an inviting and sheltered walkway from the period home to a bright, light contemporary new space.
Occupants can access the sunny slate terrace through a three panel full-height SL320 sliding door system.
On the other elevation a large bespoke fixed three pane window, over four metres wide, frames views over rolling farmland.
The glass link design is created by a combination of full height fixed windows with a fully glazed ODC121 external door. A large two pane frameless rooflight creates an effective, robust and extremely weatherproof glass roof for this narrow space.
Light comes into the walkway at all angles, and also offers a special perspective of the ancient oak tree growing between the two buildings.
