Windows for Passive Solar Heating

Aluminium doors and windows for passive solar heated house

Surrounded by ancient woodland, this passive solar heated country house integrates superb sustainability with striking modern aesthetics. The house has a highly efficient, compact, square layout which enhances air circulation, improving thermal efficiency and reducing heat loss.

Glazing for energy efficiency

At its centre is a glazed, double-height hall that has an east-west axis. This light-filled space is warm and inviting as it gets both morning and evening sunlight.  It has a natural stack effect, drawing in cool air at ground level and expelling warm air at the top of the house, and minimising the need for mechanical cooling.

The house has extensive glazing which helps to harness daylight and maximise heat gain from the sun.  Our designers specified high performance aluminium windowsODC SL800+ sliding doors and and ODC99A slimline bifolding doors to deliver minimal sightlines and enhanced insulation.

Balconies and cantilevered overhangs provide passive shading in summer but still allow low winter sunlight to warm the interior and reduce the need for additional heating.

The house has an A+ EPC rating, reflecting its exceptional energy efficiency and minimal environmental impact.

Bespoke window design and finishes

Every opening in this new home has bespoke glazing, and the project epitomises the detail to which our design team collaborates with architects to realise a vision. However, its unique and arresting feature must be the first floor bedroom’s corner window, comprising eight fixed and four central opening panels. With a compelling aspect over the landscape, its unusual design balances solar heating control, comfort and style.

Like the other installations, this large corner window has frames with a mill finish, where the natural, unpainted surface of aluminium with its semi-dull, semi-reflective appearance offers a subtle character in keeping with the home’s sustainable identity.
